The shared library

Everything you read and listen to, in one place.

goldisch is the shared library of a family or a team: ebooks, paper books and audiobooks in one place, everyone with their own shelf. Self-hosted, open source, no account with a big company and no advertising. If you would rather not host it yourself: we will host it – in the EU, free during the beta.

  • Self-hosted
  • AI access via MCP: ask your library
  • Open source (AGPL)
  • No advertising, no tracking
Time-lapse of goldisch on a computer: your own shelf, a book in the reader, a passage highlighted and shared with the group as a note, the chapter read aloud with the current sentence highlighted, an audiobook being generated, the group and the year in review.
Time-lapse of goldisch on a phone: turning pages in the reader, having the chapter read aloud and listening to the generated audiobook.

What goldisch can do

Ten things that make it worth it.

Read or listen, alone or together – those are the main functions.

Screenshot: the reader for EPUB and PDF in the browser, showing a chapter and the progress bar along the bottom.

Reader

Read EPUB and PDF right in the browser.

Chapter by chapter, with a progress bar and your own notes on the spot in the book. Nothing to install – the reader runs in the browser, on phone, tablet or PC.

Catalogue

One link, and the book is on the shelf.

Type a title or paste the link from Audible or Spotify – cover, author, description and series come along by themselves. Your own ebooks can be uploaded too, as EPUB or PDF. Ebooks, paper books and audiobooks in one library.

Screenshot: the “Offline” page – books that sit on the device and can be read without a connection.

Reading

Read on your phone where you left off on the tablet.

The reader runs in the browser – on your phone, your tablet and your PC, whether Windows, macOS or Linux. Nothing to install, and it can be added as an app without an app store. Reading offline works too: notes and progress sync as soon as you are back online.

Speed reading

One word after another – even on the smallest display.

Speed reading (RSVP), 150 to 800 words per minute.

Audiobook

Your ebook becomes your audiobook.

On your own server an ebook turns into an audiobook in good speech quality (German and English), chapter by chapter.

Switching

Read in the morning, listen in the evening – goldisch knows where you are.

Switch between the ebook and a self-generated audiobook of the same book and you land at the spot where you last were. This only works for audiobooks that goldisch itself generated from the ebook.

Together

No spoilers, promised.

On the group page you see as a family who is reading what right now, and how far. Other people's notes appear only once you are past that spot yourself. Plus comments on books and replies, right on the book.

Screenshot: research on a book – background, author and sources, gathered by an AI.

AI access

Ask your library – and ask your book.

AI access with a key of your own: “What am I reading right now?”, “Which volumes am I missing?”, “Summarise chapter 5 for me” – without giving away the ending.

Screenshot: the backup – one button downloads all accounts, books and reading positions as a file.

Self-hosted

Your books, your server, your data.

A Docker container runs on your own server or NAS. The backup takes just one click, and everyone can take their data away as a file. goldisch is open source, with no advertising and no tracking.

Screenshot: your own shelf, as it also looks in the instance we host – book cards with cover and reading progress.

Hosted

No server of your own: we host it for you.

If you cannot or would rather not host it yourself, you get an instance of your own on servers in the EU under goldisch.de – free during the beta phase. Moving to your own server later is possible any time.

Demo

Try it first, decide later.

A demo instance of goldisch lives at demo.goldisch.de: set up your own account there in a minute. Your data is only stored temporarily in the demo.

Who it is for

Reading together is a different kind of reading.

The family

The children's books sit next to the crime novels, the audiobook next to the printed volume from the bookshelf in the living room. Everyone has their own shelf and their own reading position.

The team with technical books

Handbooks, standards and technical titles of a department in one place, with a lending list for the printed copies. Looking for a chapter? Search inside the text. Short on time? Have it summed up for you.

Beta programme

Finished enough to read. Not yet finished enough for everyone.

goldisch runs, and you can read and listen with it – but it is still before the first release. We are looking for families and teams who use it day to day and tell us what is missing.

What you get

  • An instance of your own, hosted by us. Your own container on servers in the EU, your own address under goldisch.de.
  • Free for as long as the test phase lasts. No payment information, no subscription, no automatic renewal.
  • Feedback straight from the app. Bugs and ideas flow straight into further development this way.
  • You stay on board. The beta instance turns seamlessly into the finished version. If you want, you move to your own server later.

If you would rather test the self-hosted version right away, you are welcome too – but that programme only starts once the first beta test is finished.

What we expect

Use it. And tell us what bothers you – small things included.

Two things are required: an email address and the tick. Everything else helps us choose – or stays empty.

Optional. “The Millers” is quite enough.
This is how we get in touch – nowhere else.
Optional, an estimate is fine.
What do you read?
What do you read on?
Optional, and not an exam – one sentence already helps us.
